Kateryna Bilokur was a self-taught Ukrainian folk painter who spent most of her life in the village of Bohdanivka, largely unknown outside her region until the 1930s when her work finally reached wider audiences. She never received formal training and reportedly taught herself to paint using homemade brushes and pigments. Picasso, upon seeing her work at a 1954 Paris exhibition, is said to have remarked that she alone would be sufficient reason to know Ukraine.
This commemorative was issued as part of the NBU's ongoing "Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine" series, which launched in the late 1990s and consistently favored bimetallic and nickel-brass compositions for its 2-hryvnia denominations.
