Ivan Ohienko — Metropolitan Ilarion of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church — spent much of his career in forced exile, eventually settling in Canada where he taught at St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg. His scholarly output was extraordinary: a complete Ukrainian translation of the Bible published in 1962, along with decades of work on the history of the Ukrainian language and church. Ukraine's communist-era authorities had little use for him, which is precisely why a commemorative coin bearing his image waited until 2007.
