His life dates 1855–1940 are inscribed to the right of the portrait. A semicircular legend ДМИТРО ЯВОРНИЦЬКИЙ frames the design, with the text arcing along both the upper and lower periphery in a symmetrical arrangement around the effigy.

Additional information

Dmytro Yavornytskyi spent decades documenting the Zaporozhian Sich and its Cossack traditions at a time when tsarist authorities actively suppressed Ukrainian historical identity. His 1892 three-volume history of the Zaporozhian Cossacks remains the foundational scholarly work on the subject. He also built what became the Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum — now named after him — accumulating over 80,000 artifacts largely through personal fieldwork along the Dnipro River before Soviet-era flooding drowned many of the archaeological sites he had catalogued.
