Ukraine's early commemorative coinage program moved aggressively through the 1990s as the newly independent state used coin issues partly to assert cultural identity and partly to generate hard currency from collectors abroad. This piece belongs to a series protecting native flora listed under Ukraine's Red Book — the national register of endangered species first established in Soviet times and revised after independence to reflect Ukrainian scientific priorities rather than Moscow's.
The Butterfly Orchid, Anacamptis papilionacea, grows in scattered populations across Ukraine's Crimean steppe and Carpathian foothills — already under pressure from agricultural drainage by the time this coin was struck.
