Borys Liatoshynsky (1895–1968) was Ukraine's preeminent symphonist of the Soviet era — and a perpetual target of state censure for it. His Second and Third Symphonies were officially condemned as "formalist" by Soviet cultural authorities, and his Third was suppressed outright after its 1955 premiere, only rehabilitated years later. The NBU's commemorative program has consistently used the 2 hryvni format to honor Ukrainian cultural figures who were marginalized or persecuted under Soviet rule, and Liatoshynsky fits that pattern precisely.
The coin was issued on the 110th anniversary of his birth.
