Obverse description Central shield bearing the rampant Hessian lion in low relief, typical of hammered coinage of the period. The shield is flanked by the initials Z and H in the field to either side, with the monogram LL positioned above the shield, denoting Landgrave Ludwig (Louis) IV. The design is rendered in crude but characteristic hammered style with an irregular flan and weak strike areas around the periphery.
