Beschrijving keerzijde Six-line memorial legend in Roman capital letters occupying the entire field, recording the birth, accession, and death dates of Duke Anthony Ulrich in Latin. Below the legend, the denomination numeral 2 over the abbreviation GG appears within an oval cartouche, flanked by the mintmaster's initials HC and H on either side. The inscription commemorates the duke's birth on 16 May 1627, his assumption of rule on 17 September 1666, and his death on 26 January 1704. Small rosette or lozenge ornaments punctuate the final date line.

Aanvullende informatie

Anthony Ulrich ruled Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel for over five decades and spent much of that time cultivating one of the most ambitious courts in the German-speaking world — his library at Wolfenbüttel, which Leibniz directed for nearly four decades, became a model for Enlightenment scholarship. This 1704 issue is a memorial piece, struck in the year of his death at age 74, though it preceded the formal consolidation of the Brunswick lands that would follow under his successors.

Memorial groschen of this type circulated alongside ordinary issues but were frequently preserved rather than spent, which explains the survival rate in better grades.
