Pattern coinage of this type was never intended for circulation — George III's Treasury had effectively abandoned the guinea's higher multiples as practical currency long before 1777, with the 2 Guinea denomination having last seen regular production under Charles II. This piece exists as a proof-of-concept strike, almost certainly produced for presentation or cabinet purposes rather than any genuine monetary proposal.

Spink 3724A places it among the rarest documented patterns of the reign.
