Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Savoy — a quartered shield bearing the cross of Savoy — surmounted by a ducal crown with fleurons. The shield is flanked by small decorative rosettes or mullets in the field. A circular beaded border frames the design, with the Latin legend running around the full periphery reading the ruler's name and title.

Additional information

Emanuele Filiberto recovered Savoy from French occupation only after the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, which means the earlier dates in this issue's range were struck under genuinely precarious political conditions — the duke was reforming his finances while still negotiating the return of his own capital. He moved the seat of government from Chambéry to Turin in 1563, and the mint followed, making pieces from either side of that move attributable by die study rather than any mark visible to the casual eye.
