Reinoud IV inherited Guelders under a cloud — his father Wilhelm I had been captured at the Battle of Vlatten in 1377 and held prisoner for years, leaving the duchy financially strained. By the 1390s, Reinoud was navigating the competing pressures of Burgundian expansion and the fractious politics of the Lower Rhine, and coin production during his reign reflects that instability: types were revised frequently, weights crept downward, and regional imitations complicated attribution for later collectors.
The van der Chijs reference 2#9.5 places this among the better-documented varieties, though distinguishing genuine ducal strikes from contemporary copies remains a practical concern with this type.
