Jacqueline of Bavaria's tenure as Countess of Hainaut was among the most turbulent of any medieval ruler — contested by her uncle John of Bavaria, undermined by her ex-husband the Duke of Brabant, and ultimately extinguished by Philip the Good of Burgundy, who forced her abdication in 1433. Coinage issued under her name was struck across a reign defined entirely by war and dispossession.
The "Thuyne" designation refers to the double groot (groot tournois), a denomination tied to the monetary reforms circulating through the Low Countries in the early fifteenth century. That these were struck at all through sixteen years of near-continuous dynastic conflict is the more remarkable fact.
