Philip I of Saint-Pol governed Brabant as regent following the death of John IV's guardians, a politically contested arrangement that lasted barely two years before Philip himself became duke. The "Drielander" designation reflects the coin's acceptance across three territories — Brabant, Flanders, and Hainaut — a monetary alignment that was the product of active negotiation between the lords of the Low Countries rather than any automatic monetary union.
