| Obverse description | Central device comprising two heraldic shields arranged saltire-wise within a quatrefoil Gothic frame adorned with trefoil finials. The dexter shield bears the lion rampant of Brabant or Hainaut, while the sinister shield displays a comparable heraldic lion, together representing the joint dominions of John IV and Jacqueline. The shields are rendered in high relief, characteristic of the hammered billon coinage of the Low Countries in the early fifteenth century. A beaded inner circle separates the armorial field from the surrounding legend. The outer legend reads: + IOh: DX: BRAB: Z: LImB: COm: hAn: hOL: Z: 3E, identifying John as Duke of Brabant and Limburg and Count of Hainaut, Holland, and Zeeland. |
