John the Fearless struck this issue during the final months before his assassination at the bridge of Montereau in September 1419, a period in which Burgundian monetary policy was increasingly tied to his volatile alliance with the English against the Armagnacs. The braspenning denomination served the busy cloth-trade economy of Flanders, where Ghent and Bruges demanded reliable small silver that could withstand the scrutiny of merchants who weighed and tested everything.
