Ferdinando III had spent much of his reign governing Sicily under British protection after Napoleon's forces drove him from Naples in 1806. By 1814–15, with the Napoleonic settlement unraveling and the Congress of Vienna reshaping Italy, he was already maneuvering to reclaim his mainland territories — which he did in 1816, merging the two crowns into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and renumbering himself Ferdinando I in the process. This copper issue belongs to the final months of a distinct Sicilian royal identity.
