| Obverse description | The obverse is framed by an ornate guilloche border with decorative corner devices; at upper left, a circular vignette encloses the Haitian national coat of arms — a palm tree flanked by cannons and flags — within the legend 'République' above and 'Liberté Egalité Fraternité' below. A central block of French text, set in letterpress, declares the note's validity under the guarantee of the Northern Government of Haiti and the Syndicat for the value of 'DEUX GOURDES', with clauses relating to customs and export duties. To the right, a finely engraved allegorical vignette presents a classically robed female figure reclining with a balance scale, with the denomination 'DEUX GOURDES' in bold at the foot and 'DEUX' in a decorative panel at lower left. |

The République Septentrionale d'Haïti was the northern administration under Florvil Hyppolite's predecessor governments, operating in opposition to the Port-au-Prince-based south during one of Haiti's recurring periods of dual sovereignty. This note was printed by Homer Lee Bank Note Company of New York, a firm that handled a significant share of Caribbean and Latin American government printing in the late nineteenth century before being absorbed into larger consolidations in the early twentieth century.
The northern republic's independent note-issuing period was brief — reunification under Hyppolite in 1889 effectively ended the need for a separate currency, meaning this issue had a very short window of legitimate circulation.
