Nuremberg's pattern strikes of this period were produced not for circulation but as presentation pieces — gifts to visiting dignitaries, imperial functionaries, and potential creditors whose goodwill the city's merchant oligarchy actively cultivated. The Free Imperial City operated with considerable fiscal autonomy, and its mint used high-purity gold patterns as a form of institutional diplomacy during the years immediately preceding the Thirty Years' War.
The Kellner reference places this among a small group of documented gold multiples from the city's early 17th-century output. Survivors are rare by any measure.
