The État du Grand Liban was proclaimed by French General Gouraud in September 1920, carved out of the former Ottoman province of Syria under the French Mandate. This 1924 essai — a trial strike submitted for approval rather than circulation — precedes the regular issue and was produced at the Paris Mint as part of the process of establishing a currency infrastructure for the newly created state. The denomination itself reflects the hybrid monetary identity of the period: "girush" rooted in Ottoman usage, piastres syriennes the French administrative overlay.
