The État du Grand Liban — Greater Lebanon — was a French Mandate territory proclaimed in 1920, carved from Ottoman Syria with boundaries deliberately drawn to include the Bekaa Valley and the coastal cities, over Arab nationalist objections. This 1924 issue was among the first coins struck for the new entity, produced at the Paris Mint under French Mandate authority. The dual denomination — Lebanese girushān alongside Syrian piastres — reflects the transitional monetary arrangement then binding Lebanon to the Syrian pound.
