Abbeville's chamber of commerce emergency notes were part of the vast wave of locally issued nécessité currency that flooded France after the Banque de France proved unable to keep small denominations in circulation during and after the First World War. This particular 2 Franc piece, issued jointly by the town and its arrondissement chamber, dates from 1920 — late in that cycle, when many similar issuers had already begun withdrawing their notes from use.
Imprimerie Chaix was a serious commercial printer with a long history of quality work, including the Chaix railway timetables. The Leclerc design credit is relatively unusual for nécessité issues, where attribution to a named designer is rarely recorded.
