The Institut d'Émission Malgache was established following Madagascar's independence from France in 1960, replacing the franc of the French colonial monetary zone with a national currency that retained franc-based denominations while introducing Malagasy-language equivalents. "Venty sy kirobo" — the Malagasy name for this denomination — reflects that dual-language transition policy applied across the entire series.
Stainless steel was chosen for lower denominations partly to discourage hoarding of metal-value coins, a persistent problem in the region during the 1960s devaluation cycles.
