Additional information

France never formally colonized the former German and Ottoman territories assigned to it after World War I — the League of Nations mandate system required a legal fiction of trusteeship rather than outright possession. A separate coinage was accordingly struck for these territories, covering French Cameroon, Togo, Syria, Lebanon, and several smaller mandates, rather than circulating standard metropolitan French issues. The Monnaie de Paris produced this aluminium bronze series for only two years before individual mandate territories began receiving more administratively specific coinages.
