A rising sun with radiating rays occupies the lower right of the field, symbolising the dawn of the Republic. The design is set within an octagonal raised border, with the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE arcing around the periphery and the attribution D'APRES O.ROTY inscribed in small characters along the lower exergue. The word ESSAI appears in the field to the right of the figure, identifying this piece as a trial or pattern striking. |

Control proofs (épreuves de contrôle) were internal Monnaie de Paris working pieces, struck in lead to verify die alignment, collar fit, and planchet flow before authorizing a production run. They were never intended for circulation or public sale. The weight here — roughly four times that of the circulating nickel-clad piece — reflects the dense lead blanks used specifically because the material deforms predictably under pressure, making any mechanical fault in the die immediately visible.
GEM 123.16 and 123.17 designate separate die pairings within the same year's control sequence.
