The 1982 Monaco essais were struck by the Monnaie de Paris as pattern pieces — official trial strikings produced not for circulation but to test dies and establish production standards. Monaco's circulating coinage had been denominated in francs under the Franco-Monégasque monetary convention, but by 1982 that arrangement was in its final years; the franc series would be superseded by euro-denominated issues following France's adoption of the single currency two decades later. Essais of this period were issued in strictly limited numbers to collectors and are seldom encountered outside specialized sales.
