Piedfort essais of this type were struck at the Paris Mint as presentation and archival pieces, produced at double the standard planchet thickness using the same working dies as the circulation issue. Morocco was still under French Protectorate administration in 1951, and coin production remained entirely a French metropolitan function — the Moroccan authorities had no independent role in authorizing or producing these pieces.
The aluminium composition distinguishes this from the copper-nickel piedfort of the same type, KM#PEA9, struck concurrently for the same purpose.
