Morocco's 1945 coinage was struck under the authority of the French Protectorate, with Mohammed V nominally on the coinage despite having little actual governing power at the time. The French resident-general effectively controlled monetary policy, making these issues a product of Paris as much as Rabat. Just seven years after this coin was struck, Mohammed V would be exiled to Madagascar by French authorities in 1953 — a miscalculation that galvanized Moroccan nationalist sentiment and accelerated independence.
