Obverse description This piece represents a contrôle (control) striking used internally by the Monnaie de Paris to assess die pressure and planchet flow characteristics; the obverse design — depicting a portrait of Louis Pasteur before the Institut Pasteur, with the legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE above and the dates 1822–1895 flanking the subject's name below, together with the engraver's signature P. RODIER and the ESSAI designation — has not been transferred to this lead squeeze. Instead, the surface displays a series of concentric raised rings radiating outward from a central boss, a hallmark feature of such épreuves de contrôle, confirming die alignment and metal distribution prior to official striking. The lead planchet shows characteristic soft-metal flow at the periphery, consistent with its use as a mechanical test piece rather than a numismatic presentation item. No inscriptions are visible on this face.
