| Obverse description | Full-length draped figure of Helvetia standing, facing left, clad in a flowing toga, grasping a spear vertically in her right hand and resting her left hand upon a shield bearing the Swiss federal cross. A wreath of 22 stars encircles the central figure along the inner border, symbolising the 22 cantons of the Swiss Confederation. The legend HELVETIA appears in the upper field, with the engraver's signature A. BOVY INCᵀ. inscribed below the figure. The composition, engraved by Antoine Bovy, reflects the classicising allegorical style prevalent in mid-nineteenth-century European coinage. |
