This piece commemorates the 25th anniversary of Leopold I's inauguration as Belgium's first king, an event that took place on July 21, 1831 — a date still observed as Belgian National Day. The French-language version was struck alongside a Dutch-language counterpart, reflecting the bilingual political compromise that had defined Belgian governance since independence from the Netherlands.
Leopold was 65 at the time of striking and would die less than a decade later.
