The Institut d'Émission Malgache functioned as Madagascar's transitional monetary authority following independence from France in 1960, bridging the gap before the Banque Centrale de Madagascar assumed full control. Essai pieces from this authority were struck in Paris as production trials, distributed in small quantities to ministry officials and collectors rather than released to circulation.
