Obverse description Draped bust of Marianne, wearing a winged helmet, facing left, rendered in high relief in the classical French Republican style by engraver L. Bazor. Ships with masts are depicted in the background field to either side of the effigy. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE curves along the left rim, with the word ESSAI inscribed vertically to the right of the bust. The date 1964 appears in the exergue, flanked by small decorative symbols, with the engraver's signature L.BAZOR and initials GB visible at the base of the bust.

Essai strikes for the Comoro Islands in this period were produced at the Paris Mint as part of the administrative process required before any new coinage could enter circulation in French overseas territories. This particular piece never led to a circulating issue — the 2 franc denomination was abandoned before production commenced, leaving the essai without a successor.
