This piece was struck for the 25th anniversary of Leopold I's inauguration as Belgium's first king — an occasion the young nation used to assert dynastic continuity and constitutional stability. Belgium had existed for only a quarter-century, and the jubilee commemorations in 1856 carried deliberate political weight. The Dutch-text variant exists alongside a French-text counterpart, reflecting the linguistic division built into Belgian civic life from the country's founding.
Both text variants were produced as presentation or souvenir pieces rather than circulating currency, which explains survival rates in higher grades.
