Emergency chamber of commerce notes like this one proliferated across France during and after the First World War when the Banque de France could not supply small denomination coinage fast enough to meet daily commercial demand. The Nancy chamber issued its own fractional currency under authorization from the French government, a system that produced dozens of locally distinct types across the country between roughly 1914 and the early 1920s.
The Imprimeries Réunies de Nancy printed this series locally — notable given that Nancy had been within German artillery range for much of the war, the front passing through Lorraine just kilometers to the east.
