Allied Military Currency for France was produced in the United States beginning in 1944 under SHAEF authority, part of a broader program that also covered lira, marks, and yen series for different theaters. The French government under de Gaulle bitterly opposed these notes — he viewed them as a form of financial occupation by Washington and refused to grant them legal tender status. The dispute was sharp enough that AMC francs were withdrawn from French circulation relatively quickly once the Provisional Government asserted control over monetary policy.
Forbes Lithograph in Boston produced the French series using offset lithography rather than intaglio, which gave the notes a noticeably flat printed feel and made them easier to counterfeit than conventional issues.
