The Banque de la Réunion's wartime fractional notes emerged from a specific logistical problem: the disruption of normal currency supply from metropolitan France following the fall of the Third Republic. Réunion initially aligned with Vichy before rallying to Free France in late 1942, and the political transition created acute shortages of small-denomination notes in daily circulation. These 2 Franc paper issues were a stopgap.
Printing arrangements for the island's emergency issues during this period were improvised rather than institutional, and Pick 35 is among the more difficult entries in the Réunion wartime series to source in any condition.
