The Afrique Occidentale Française 2 Francs of 1944 belongs to a series of low-denomination emergency notes issued under the Free French administration after the AOF territories formally aligned with de Gaulle following the fall of Vichy authority in late 1942. The small denominations were a practical response to a chronic shortage of coin and low-value currency across the federation — metals had largely disappeared from circulation.
Pick 35 was printed by the Imprimerie du Gouvernement Général in Dakar, keeping production within the territory rather than routing it through metropolitan France, which remained logistically complicated during the war years.
