Nanterre operated as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War One, holding predominantly German and Austro-Hungarian detainees on French soil. Internal camp scrip of this type was issued to allow controlled canteen transactions without putting official French currency into circulation among prisoners — a policy applied across French internment facilities from 1914 onward.

The Nanterre issues are among the more obscure of the French camp emissions. Unlike the larger depots at Rennes or Montargis, Nanterre's scrip saw limited scholarly attention, and surviving examples turn up infrequently in specialist sales.
