Matthias II secured the Hungarian throne in 1608 largely through a noble revolt he himself organized against his own brother, Rudolf II — an arrangement formalized in the Peace of Vienna, which also guaranteed Protestant religious freedoms that the Habsburgs would spend the next century trying to claw back. His Hungarian coronation required explicit concessions to the Diet that no previous Habsburg had been forced to accept.
The double florin denomination in this period was primarily an instrument of trade rather than domestic circulation, moving along the Ottoman frontier commercial routes where Hungarian gold commanded reliable premiums.
