The forint was introduced on August 1, 1946, replacing the pengő after one of the most catastrophic hyperinflations ever recorded — the daily inflation rate had reached 207 percent, and the total price level multiplied by a factor of approximately 1026 during the pengő's final months. The 2 fillér denomination being commemorated here is an irony worth noting: the fillér, one one-hundredth of a forint, had effectively ceased to have practical value in circulation long before this anniversary issue appeared.
