| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a six-pointed star (Seal of Solomon / Star of David), formed by two interlaced equilateral triangles, enclosed within a plain circular border. A raised central pellet occupies the focal point of the star. The design is rendered in a bold, primitive style characteristic of Moroccan cast coinage of the mid-19th century, with no legend or inscription on this side. |

Sidi Mohammed IV came to the Alaoui throne in 1859, the year Morocco signed the Treaty of Tetuan ending a disastrous war with Spain — a conflict that left the treasury depleted and forced an indemnity payment of 20 million duros. Bronze fulus coinage of this reign was struck at Fes under considerable fiscal pressure, and the early 1860s issues reflect an administration scrambling to maintain a functioning petty currency while hemorrhaging silver reserves to Spanish creditors.
The Fes mint designation on this type distinguishes it from contemporary Marrakesh strikes catalogued separately under C#163.1.
