Additional information

Mahmud Shah III ascended to the throne of Gujarat as a child, and real power during much of his reign was held by a succession of regent nobles — most consequentially Imad ul-Mulk, whose factional struggles destabilized the sultanate from within. These were also the decades in which Portuguese naval pressure on Gujarat's western coast was intensifying, culminating in the loss of Diu's surrounding territories through treaty concessions. Copper falus issues of this period circulated in local bazaar economies largely insulated from that coastal turbulence.
