The "Maastricht red star" nickname refers to the red enamel applied to the twelve-star ring of the standard eurozone design — a post-mint colorization that is not officially sanctioned by the European Central Bank but is tolerated as a collectible novelty. These colored pieces are produced by private firms after legal tender coins leave the mint, making them a secondary market product rather than an official Royal Dutch Mint issue.
