Obverse description The inner disc features a stylised portrait of the humanist scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam, rendered in a contemporary graphic style, occupying the left portion of the field. Radiating from the portrait is a network of connecting links or beams extending across the disc toward a second focal point, symbolising the exchange of students and ideas across Europe under the Erasmus Programme; several of these links converge to form additional star motifs, evoking the synergy of participating nations. The numeral '35', denoting the 35th anniversary of the programme, emerges prominently from the star-formed elements in a bold, modern typographic style. The legends '1987–2022', 'ERASMUS PROGRAMMA', the country code 'NL', and the designer's initials 'J.J.' appear within the inner disc. The outer ring carries the twelve stars of the European Union flag.

Reverse description The standard reverse design for euro circulation coins by Luc Luycx features a map of Western Europe spanning both the inner disc and a portion of the outer ring on the right side of the coin. The denomination '2 EURO' is superimposed over the map, with the large numeral '2' set in the open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean to the left of the landmass. Six vertical lines traverse the inner disc, connecting the upper and lower star groupings. Twelve stars from the European Union flag are arranged on the right side of the outer ring, six above and six below the map. The designer's initials 'LL' appear to the right of the map.
