Obverse description The obverse depicts a stylised rendering of the Treaty of Rome document, set against a background evoking the Michelangelo-designed paving of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, site of the original signing on 25 March 1957. The Irish-language legend CONRADH NA RÓIMHE 50 BLIAIN (Treaty of Rome 50 Years) and AN EORAIP (Europe) arc across the field, with the issuer name ÉIRE and the year 2007 also inscribed. The design was selected through a competition organised by the European mints and is shared by all participating euro-area member states, with each country rendering the legends in its own national language or Latin. The coin commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty that established the European Economic Community. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union.
