N.A.F.S.E.P. was one of dozens of French regional associations that issued scrip tokens in the lead-up to euro adoption, allowing local businesses and municipalities to rehearse euro-denominated transactions before the currency became legal tender in 1999. These preparatory issues had no legal tender status and circulated only within voluntary trial schemes. The Richelieu district of Indre-et-Loire was among the more active participants in these regional pilots.
