Andorra gained the right to issue euro-circulation coinage only in 2014, following a monetary agreement with the EU signed in 2011 — notably without being an EU member state. Charlemagne is the obvious patron for this small Pyrenean co-principality: his 778 campaign through the region, and the subsequent Frankish administration of the Spanish March, forms the historical root of Andorran autonomy under what would eventually become the co-princeship structure still operative today.
