Spyridon Louis won the marathon at the 1896 Athens Olympics — the first modern Games — becoming the only Greek gold medalist of that revival and an instant national hero. This coin was struck for the 119th anniversary of that victory, an oddly specific interval explained by Greece's 2015 financial crisis: a commemorative had been planned for the cleaner 2016 anniversary, but Eurozone bailout negotiations and capital controls disrupted the minting calendar, pushing the issue forward.
