| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse displays the standard eurozone design for the 2 Euro denomination, featuring a relief map of the European continent extending beyond the borders of the inner disc into the outer ring, rendered without national borders. The face value '2 EURO' appears to the left of the map, with the engraver's initials 'LL' for Luc Luycx incorporated into the design. The outer ring bears the twelve stars of the European Union. |

Issued during the vacancy between Benedict XVI's resignation on February 28, 2013, and the election of Pope Francis on March 13 — a period of just thirteen days — this is one of two Sede Vacante euros struck by the Vatican, the other following John Paul II's death in 2005. Benedict's abdication was the first papal resignation since Gregory XII in 1415, which gave the College of Cardinals no modern procedural precedent to follow. Mintage was tightly restricted, as Vatican euro issues always are, but the historical circumstances drove immediate collector demand well beyond the norm for the series.
