Pūzuris is a traditional Latvian ornament — a hanging mobile of geometric straw construction made during the winter solstice festival of Ziemassvētki — and its selection for a circulating commemorative reflects Latvia's sustained effort since EU accession to anchor national identity in pre-Christian folk tradition rather than Soviet-era symbols. The Latvian mint has leaned heavily on ethnographic motifs across its euro commemorative program, a deliberate curatorial stance.
