Slovenia issued this coin to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar, the Protestant reformer who produced the first printed books in the Slovenian language. His 1550 Catechismus and Abecedarium, printed in Tübingen while Trubar was in exile under Habsburg religious pressure, established the orthographic foundation for written Slovene — a linguistic act with consequences that outlasted the Reformation itself.
Trubar spent much of his life outside Slovenian territory, banned by the Catholic authorities in Vienna.
